What happens when I show up for a study?

When you arrive at our sleep center a staff member will welcome you and introduce you to our facility. There will also be a few forms to fill out including insurance verification and your co-payment will be collected. Next you will dress for bed as you normally would do and then your sleep technician will walk you through the sleep test procedure. Finally we will proceed with placing electrodes on your head, face, neck, chest, legs and hand so that we can monitor your heart rate, respiration, blood-oxygen level and movements while you sleep.

How do I sleep with all those wires connected to me?

While sleeping with wires connected to you may seem daunting, most patients are able to fall asleep without complications.

Do I have to go to sleep right away?

No. You are free to read a book or even watch TV (in facilities that provide them) if that is what you normally do before going to sleep. However, we do require at least 6 hours of actual sleep in order for the test to be effective so the time you have available for these types of activities is limited.

What if I need to use the rest room during the test?

Getting out of bed and moving around is not difficult. Also, a sleep technician will always be available to assist you.

How many people will be in the room? Do I get my own room?

Each patient gets their own room and accredited facilities such as ours always maintain a 2-1 patient-staff ratio.

Can someone stay with me?

While we encourage loved ones to come to the initial orientation with you, we highly recommend that you be the only one to stay in the facility overnight. Typically exceptions are only made for full-time caregivers in your employ.

Will I notice anything while I sleep? What happens while I sleep?

Sleep tests are purely observational and nothing is "done to you" while you sleep. Your sleep technician will simply monitor the data coming in through the electrodes which will be interpreted by a board-certified sleep physician at a later time.

What will you learn from this study?

With the data coming in through the electrodes we will be able to determine not only what kind of sleep disorder you have (Periodic Limb Movement, Insomnia, etc) but what exactly is causing it. This allows us to develop a treatment plan tailored to your specific condition.
